Read previewWhen Kari Lake jumped into the Arizona GOP Senate primary last October, many conservatives were thrilled with the decision, confident she'd energize base voters in the general election. It's still early in the campaign, but the numbers are a sign that she has so far not consolidated GOP support around her candidacy. "Ultimately, the Republican Senate committee is probably going to realize before too long that there's far better opportunities for victories in other parts of the country," he added. But in addition to Arizona, they're angling to flip seats in Montana, Ohio, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

The armorer who put a live round into the gun that Alec Baldwin was rehearsing with on the set of the film “Rust” in 2021 when it went off, killing the cinematographer, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter on Wednesday. The conviction of the armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, marks the first time a jury has weighed in at trial on the fatal shooting of the cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins. After the verdict was read, prosecutors asked that Ms. Gutierrez-Reed be taken into custody and the judge, Mary L. Marlowe Sommer, agreed. A court officer led Ms. Gutierrez-Reed out of the courtroom, not in handcuffs. Mr. Baldwin is also facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter and is scheduled to stand trial in July.

While a number of AI systems have been found to discriminate, tipping the scales in favor of certain races, genders or incomes, there’s scant government oversight. Those bills, along with the over 400 AI-related bills being debated this year, were largely aimed at regulating smaller slices of AI. The use of AI to make consequential decisions — what the bills call “automated decision tools” — is pervasive but largely hidden. The AI was trained to assess new resumes by learning from past resumes — largely male applicants. Requirements to routinely test an AI system aren’t in most of the legislative proposals, nearly all of which still have a long road ahead.

Why checked bag fees are at record highs
  + stars: | 2024-03-02 | by ( Nathaniel Meyersohn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Checked bag fees are hitting record highs as airlines up the ante. So an airline can save $75 million in tax fees off its $1 billion revenue in domestic checked-bag fees. The introduction of bag fees was also a response to the rise of low-price carriers like Spirit in the United States and Ryanair in Europe. But airlines kept the bag fees in place and even raised them in an effort to make up for the lost revenue from change fees. Bag fees have been a political punching bag.
